Using magazines in homeschool activities

So what do you do with a child that doesn't enjoy drawing (this stems from a fear of "doing it wrong" and sadly a Sunday School teacher questioning his drawing abilities and telling him when he was a third grader that his drawings look like those of a kindergartner) when making a notebook for one of your homeschool subjects? You use lots and lots of pictures from magazines!

I was so fortunate to find many magazines this summer in the freebie bin at one of our library branches. I am using Apologia's Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day for our science this year and this is what my oldest put together for his notebook to show field marks...

and the importance of looking at a bird's eyes and eye markings...

when identifying birds. I am highly pleased his enthusiastic response to this activity.

What a mean, thoughtless thing to say to a young child! He did a great job with the field marks!

What a great idea! My ds1 is something of a perfectionist, so often will not draw free-hand because it's never good enough to suit him. This would be a great alternative! I'm so sorry about the thoughtless comment; it's hard when people don't think before they speak to children. Bless his heart!

I am sad that someone discouraged your son so. However, your solution is fantastic! Very creative!

That is so sad that someone would tell a child that. What a great idea for him to still accomplish what he needed to show. Have a great day.
